In the exhibition Following Eternity, new paintings on various materials by Nina Wengel and a new series of pencil drawings by Odey Curbelo are presented. The artists have been in close dialogue on a joint exhibition concept that examines the idea of repetition and eternity within the artistic process.
Nina Wengel
Nina Wengel’s paintings vary in size but share a repetitive pattern built around the same sunset motif. Different materials — wood, plastic and cardboard — serve as backdrops for the motifs. The works reflect not only experiments with materials and technical solutions, but also an artist’s dilemma on what matters most: the final result or the process.
Odey Curbelo
Odey Curbelo’s series of drawings reads as a diary-like record of the creative process. The visual expression is abstract and poetic, with subtle references to his longstanding interest in nature.
To emphasise the repetitive drawing process over the individual drawing, the works are exhibited on eight large, simple working tables aligned symmetrically in the room.
The Repetitions
Following Eternity is a visual fragment of an ongoing creative process. Both Odey Curbelo’s and Nina Wengel’s artistic productions are driven by a particular necessity to follow a repetitive rhythm that might continue into eternity. The exhibited works are made in an almost meditative rhythm, grounded in intuition — yet both artists apply rules of time and working method as logical frameworks for production.
The Installations
Rather than hanging, the paintings are presented as sculptural objects leaning against the wall, while the drawings are displayed on tables instead of frames. This installation method breaks with the typical exhibition setup and instead draws references to the experience of artworks in the studio. What happens to the value of the works when they leave the artist’s workspace to reach a larger audience? When is the work actually born — when the artist applies the finishing touches, or when the public throws the first glance at it?
The exhibition Following Eternity opened with a reception on Saturday, 26 April, at 1pm. The exhibition was opened by curator Tijana Mišković.
